Hammond Group was awarded the Battery Council International’s Innovation Award on September 23, 2021, at the association’s 2021 meeting in San Diego, CA.
HGI was recognized for a novel application of lead silicate in its GravityGuard™ battery additive to increase cycling capability and extend battery life, becoming the first repeat winner of the BCI Innovation Award, in honor of Sally Breidegam Miksiewicz. Functioning as atomic level “micro-sponges”, the patent-pending GravityGuard™ reduces the problem of electrolyte stratification, a major factor in reducing battery life. Hammond was the inaugural winner of the BCI Innovation Award in 2016 for work on carbon-based additives and its Center-of-Excellence research facility in Hammond, IN.
Thanking the BCI for its award, CEO Terrence Murphy said HGI was honored to again be recognized for its commitment to lead battery technology for advanced energy storage.
“Technological advances in Energy Storage are required if the world is to successfully transition to renewable energy and electrify our transportation systems,” said Murphy. “Advanced lead batteries, incorporating our additives, along with many other significant changes in battery configurations, have dramatically improved charge acceptance and cycle life. A new generation of advanced Lead batteries are an emerging, more sensible alternative to lithium-ion for a green energy future.
Lithium-ion batteries are essential for personal electronics and some mobility applications where weight and volume are critical, but questionable for storing intermittent solar and wind energy as lithium-ion is neither recyclable nor sustainable and depletes scarce strategic resources.
In contrast, Lead batteries are 99% recycled, recognized by the EPA as our most recycled consumer product. Lead batteries are produced from used lead batteries in an economically viable, ‘cradle-to-cradle’, closed-loop system. Simply put, the battery in your car is a recycled car battery!
Increasing the effectiveness of the lead battery is Hammond Group’s mission and focus, so we are honored by the industry recognizing our contributions to advancing this critical technology.”
