Mr. Murphy brings his skilled leadership and decades of experience in the aerospace industry to his role as President and CEO of Hammond Group, Inc. A well-established chemical manufacturing company specializing in the optimization of batteries and energy storage necessities across multiple industries, Hammond has been a leader in innovation and reliability for nearly a century.
Mr. Murphy first joined Hammond with a summer job in 1975 when his father was Plant Manager. After completing his education and spending three decades in the aerospace industry developing rocket engines and deep space power systems, he returned to Hammond in 2011 as a Board of Directors member and in 2013 was elected President and CEO.
Before joining Hammond, he was the founding CEO of SolarReserve, a world leader in solar thermal power “on-demand”, long after the sun has set, using proprietary molten salt energy storage technology. Prior to SolarReserve, Mr. Murphy held senior executive positions at the Boeing Company and United Technologies where his Advanced Programs organization not only produced rocket engines and power systems for deep space exploration, but leveraged these core competencies into clean, renewable, and sustainable energy systems for terrestrial applications.
He received his Master of Science in Systems Management from the University of Southern California and his Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering from Purdue University. He holds several patents, a Silver Snoopy award from the Astronaut Corps, and received the Outstanding Engineering Award from Purdue University. He is an associate fellow in the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, serves on the Industrial Advisory Board for the Aero Engineering School at Purdue, is a BOD member of Battery Council International and serves as a board member on the Indiana Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Murphy continues to provide strategic, technical, and program management guidance to investment firms targeting the Hybrid Automotive and Renewable Energy sectors and has been a guest speaker on Entrepreneurship for the MBA Program at USC and the Engineering Programs at UCLA and Purdue University.
